Spatial Design for the ZURIGA Store and Espresso Bar: Aesthetics of juxtaposed materials. Textiles sourced directly from the Kvadrat manufacturing house, still equiped with the visible seams that typically get discarded, are draped over plumbing pipes. In the showroom, an aluminum sheet is placed on a simple pine wood structure, with industrial metal refrigerators and drawers stowed underneath. The bar itself is crafted from tin, a material reminiscent of classic Italian espresso bars. We were fortunate to have found a skilled maker proficient in this craft. This material's soft characteristics – so delicate that even a fingernail can leave an impression – result in a graceful aging process, acquiring a matte finish over time along with subtle dents and scratches that add character. As part of the window display, the espresso machine is placed on a stack of Ytong blocks, typically used for insulation in construction. Their off-white hue, combined with the rough texture, result in a beautiful contrast to the espresso machine's appearance. Through their simplicity and inherent imperfections, these components evoke an approachable sensibility that counters the otherwise flawlessly designed space we were tasked with transforming.
